QuickBooks Online has roughly 80% of the US small business accounting software market. Xero has the stronger reputation in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. We use both every day for client work and have strong opinions about which is better β and for whom.
Where QuickBooks Online Wins
QBO dominates the US market for a reason. The US-specific tax features β payroll, 1099 management, sales tax tracking β are more developed than Xero's. The integration ecosystem is larger: almost every US accounting tool (payroll processors, point of sale systems, CRMs) connects to QBO natively. If you are a US business using a US bookkeeper or CPA, QBO is almost certainly the better default choice. Your accountant is more likely to be QBO-proficient, and US-specific tax compliance workflows are better built.
Where Xero Wins
Xero has a cleaner, more modern interface that most non-accountants find easier to navigate. The bank reconciliation workflow in Xero is genuinely smoother than QBO. Xero's multi-currency support is more robust, making it better for businesses invoicing in multiple currencies. If you are a UK or Australian business, or you have a bookkeeper who trained in those markets, Xero is usually the better fit.
The Honest Take on Pricing
Both products price on a per-month subscription basis and both have increased prices significantly in 2023β2025. QBO Simple Start runs $30/month, Essentials $60/month, Plus $90/month. Xero Starter is $29/month, Standard $46/month, Premium $62/month. The tier structure is similar. Xero is modestly cheaper at equivalent feature levels, but pricing changes frequently and promotions are common β check current pricing before making a decision based on cost.
What Your Bookkeeper Uses Should Influence Your Choice
The most important factor that is often overlooked: what does your bookkeeper or CPA use? If you hire a bookkeeper who works primarily in QBO and you set up Xero, there will be friction. Ask your bookkeeper first. A good bookkeeper is proficient in both, but has one they prefer β and you will get slightly better service if you use their preferred platform.
